When and Where Is Grand Convention?

Grand Convention 2016 will be held at the Arizona Biltmore in Phoenix, Arizona, from Thursday, June 23, to Sunday, June 26, 2016.

What to Expect at Grand Convention

Grand Convention 2016 will start with optional pre-Convention programming on Thursday afternoon. Convention will officially begin that evening with alumnae and college district meetings and college and alumnae mixers. The mixers will give you the opportunity to meet Theta sisters in your geographic region as well as age group. Following the mixers, a Theta informational gala will include a meet-and-greet with Grand Council; a welcome from the Fraternity’s president, Laura Ware Doerre, will wrap up the evening. Friday will begin with breakfast, during which attendees can catch up with old friends, meet sisters from across North America and Canada, network, and prepare for the full day ahead. Nikê, the official opening ceremony of Convention, will follow, leading into the Opening Business Session. At lunch, expect an informative and fun program that will engage Thetas at all points in their fraternal journey. Our keynote speaker will address the Convention body in the early afternoon, and legislative sessions will follow. Programming for non-delegates during this time will give you the opportunity to gain information about the Fraternity and your roles within in it. The day will wrap up with the Chapter Recognition Dinner, a formal affair enjoyed by all. We will conclude the evening with a celebration of Theta’s successes during the past biennium!

On Saturday, we will again be offering a program-free breakfast to facilitate informal idea-sharing. Legislative sessions will resume immediately after, during which non-delegates will be offered educational programming, followed by lunch, where we will celebrate the relationship between Kappa Alpha Theta and CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates), discussing what we’ve accomplished and where we are heading with this partnership. An initiation ceremony will follow, allowing the opportunity for attendees to witness this ritual performed correctly. A long-time favorite, this session will prove to be educational as well as inspirational. The Closing Business Session will wrap up the business of Grand Convention 2016, and the 2018 site will be announced. The Convention Banquet, a time-honored tradition, will serve as the back-drop for the installation of the new Grand Council and will be preceded by the procession in which every Theta in attendance will process into the ballroom in order of chapter of initiation.

Who Should Attend Convention?

College Chapter Delegates:

There is ONE college chapter delegate per chapter. Each CEO must attend as the voting chapter delegate unless permission is received from the college district director (CDD) to send another chapter member in her place. The procedure is:

  • Contact your CDD as soon as possible, no later than 30 days before the registration deadline.
  • Provide your CDD with a written description of why you are unable to attend.
  • The CDD will review and grant or deny the request.
  • If excused, the chapter shall nominate and elect another executive committee officer to serve as the college chapter's delegate.

Alumnae Chapter Delegates:

Each alumnae chapter is encouraged to send ONE voting delegate to Grand Convention. The woman who is currently serving her alumnae chapter as president shall be the alumnae chapter delegate. In the event the president is unable to fulfill this role, the chapter shall designate another officer as its delegate. If an officer is to serve as the chapter delegate, no approval process is necessary. If a non-officer is to serve as the delegate, approval must be granted by the alumnae district director (ADD). In all cases, if the chapter president is not to be the delegate, please notify Registration Coordinator Chris Finley.

Non-Delegates:

All college chapter and alumnae members are encouraged and welcome to attend Grand Convention.

I Attended Grand Convention 2014. What Will Be Different in 2016?

Thanks to feedback from attendees at Grand Convention 2014, we’re offering even more opportunities for networking and leadership education! Optional pre-Convention programming will be offered free of charge the afternoon of Thursday, June 23, and educational breakout sessions are scheduled for non-delegates during the business sessions. The breakfasts are program-free to facilitate information idea-sharing.

How Much Does It Cost to Attend Convention?

All voting delegates’ registration (to include programming, room, and meals) has been paid, so no fee is due at the time of registration. The cost for a non-delegate to attend in a double-occupancy room is $1,210 if registering prior to May 1. Space permitting, registration will remain open May 2-15 at a rate of $1,260.

When Can I Register for Convention?

Voting delegates: Registration opens on February 15, 2016, and closes on March 30, 2016, at 11:59pm PST.

Non-delegates: Registration opens on April 1, 2016, and closes (space permitting) on May 15, 2016, at 11:59pm PST. An early-bird registration rate is offered through April 30.

How Do I Register for Convention?

Once registration goes live, go to the Registration tab on this website. Once you log in using the same username and password you have on file for the Theta website, the registration page will give you further instructions.

I’ve Registered and Can’t Find My Confirmation Email. How Can I Access It?

Simply log in to this website and visit the Register page, where you can retrieve your confirmation details.

Will There Be Any Time to Sightsee or Enjoy the Facilities at the Arizona Biltmore?

The Arizona Biltmore is offering a special pre- and post-Convention guest-room rate of $129 per night. Because the Convention schedule is full, attendees are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to add an extra day for relaxation and sightseeing.

Can I Choose My Roommate?

All alumnae and college chapter delegates will be assigned a roommate. Non-delegates may designate a roommate preference on their registration forms, and every effort will be made to honor these requests. Those delegates with no preference listed will be assigned a roommate.

Will There Be a Professional Photographer?

A professional photographer will be on site throughout Grand Convention. You will have the option to purchase photos after Convention; a link to the photographer's website will be posted a few weeks following the event. By submitting your Grand Convention registration form, you agree that you understand that you may be photographed and/or videotaped during Grand Convention 2016, and that you authorize Kappa Alpha Theta Fraternity to use your likeness.

Will There Be a Theta Marketplace in 2016?

Yes! The Marketplace will be open from noon – midnight on Thursday, June 23 to allow a shopping opportunity for all attendees—even those with flight delays! The Marketplace is a favorite where attendees have the opportunity to shop for officially-licensed merchandise, including badges, T-shirts, stationery, water bottles and much, much more! To find out which vendors are coming to Grand Convention, please visit the Vendors/Sponsors page in a few months, as we finalize the list.
